Instead, I ask you to consider why a game has a 90%+ positive rating but less than 7.5% of its owner base reached the ending.Ībsolutely incredible! This game holds up fairly well, albeit with some minor hiccups, I find. I could be cynical and say something snide like "Jet Set Radio is only popular because you pirated it when you were 11 years old, and engaging in vandalism while being shot at by paratroopers/tanks/helicopters shamelessly fueled your prepubescent woe-is-me persecution complex" - and let's be honest, audience, I'd be right - but I'm not going to say that. Philosophically, you shouldn't have to engage in infinite Technique loops to get a Jet rating in Graffiti mode. * (Grind Square) Point thresholds for Jet rankings are 15-20% too high across the board. * (Grind Square) It's possible to be standing on the lift and have policemen grab you before the lift rises and/or when it's just starting to rise. * (Bantam Street: Jet Crush) You have to spray the vertical surface of the designated target, which is not immediately obvious as it's the only instance of an elevated vertical-facing spray-target in the game. * (Kogane: Fight or Flight) Sewer -> Fall into water -> You can spawn immediately into paratrooper gunfire, which knocks you back into the water you just climbed out of. This can and will result in occasionally stumbling off of the roofs and onto the ground. * (Benten/Kogane) Rooftops are uneven, sometimes causing your character to temporarily be unable to dash or jump, the only two forms of generating speed. * (Shabuya) The "connecting" screen between the three main areas is disorienting upon first discovery, as the directional controls change immediately (or shortly?) upon transition. * If you're hit by a car, it has the potential to knock you onto its roof and then drive out-of-bounds, forcibly ending the stage. And good luck trying to jump off the half-pipe and through a door to stairs, you can miss that and lose a Jet Crush in that one moment alone. the half-pipe in Shabuya and the sewer loops in Kagone are notorious for stopping you outright while being on a 30-degree incline. ![]() The best example of this is the ground-touching lift in Grind Square: it's marginally off the ground, so you can't skate onto it directly - you have to hop onto it. * Uneven terrain is infuriating to 'interact' with. * Every time you collide with a rival in a race, you take damage and knock-back while the rival is completely unaffected. The next few points deal with similar issues. * The majority of the time you collide with anything, expect to lose all speed/velocity and take 100% of the 'loss' during the impact. This means your character can and will fall to the ground, potentially causing damage. * (Technique mode) When time is up, your character stops completely. You end up having to 'feel' your way through a stage more than seeing it, and it's a painful learning curve for when you're just starting out on any given stage. No visual clarity among them either - black cables in a dark setting (Benten, Grind Square) doesn't build confidence. * Hit detection to jump onto cables/tightropes is.not great. * Graffiti occasionally gives +50 to score but there's no documentation in-game regarding how to receive the bonus. It's kind of a necessity since trick-looping is required in Technique mode, but still. * Dash-jumping is faster than regular dashing. if you miss a Jet ranking in Story mode, you have to play through the story *again* until you reach the desired stage. * (Pause Menu) Cannot end/save stage immediately (specifically, upon gathering all Graffiti souls for a given area) * (Pause Menu) Cannot choose to restart stage from the beginning. I can forgive some issues in an era-adjusted sense, as it is a first-generation 32-bit game, but below is a list of issues I can't look past: Yes, the cel-shaded graphics were revolutionary at the time, and yes, the OST is solid, but viewing Jet Set Radio (2000) through a modern lens reveals a game whose strong creative vision is blotted out by a woeful user experience. ![]()
